thickened second toenail

I had my bunion removed and now second toe is longer than big toe and since I don't have strength in big toe my second toes grips shoes, floor etc when I walk and my nail is thicken ending. All one color. End of toes also has a callus. Is there anything I can do to soften nail and yo keep callus from building.

Your second toe might have been longer than the first before your surgery. However now that the second toe is longer, the body doesn't want that so it will try and bring that second toe back and the nail will probably thicken and then end of the toe will probably callus up as well.

How to treat it?

I am unsure if you can stop it from occurring. Making sure that all your footwear it the right length is helpful. Some people find a toe prop helpful- one can be made at a Chiropodist/ Podiatrist practice and other can be bought. They lift up your toe to prevent it from hitting the floor. It will slow down the process if it fits and works well.
