Founded in 1991, Powerstep Orthotics strives to prevent and relieve common foot problems with affordability and the most effective products available. Dr. Les Appel, a runner, foot surgeon and podiatrist, Powerstep’s founder, has over 35 years of experience prescribing and creating custom orthotics.
In his quest to effectively relieve foot pain, Dr. Les Appel realized that there were a few common shapes of orthotics that were successful for most patients. Through extensive computer analysis of the average dimensions of thousands of feet, Powerstep products are created with superior materials and superior design.
In 1992 the first Powerstep orthotic product was sold to running stores and podiatrists. Since then, there are over 600 retailers selling Powerstep products and over 4000 medical professionals prescribing them.
In order to provide customers with innovative and effective products, their line incorporates different lengths, sizes, and cushioning to suit a variety of foot issues and shoe types.
Powerstep believes that orthotics not only relieve aches and pains due to foot problems, but that they can improve overall health.
Their approach is that Powerstep can be an important part of a person’s holistic health plan. OnPowerstep’s website they have included a glossary of foot problems so that their customers can gain a better understanding and ability to identify foot ailments they may be experiencing.
Some of these common foot problems include:
Pronation – this foot problem makes it difficult for the foot to supinate and stabilize movement, causing several problems including heel pain, bunions, tailor bunions, hammertoes, calluses, neuromas, pump bump, ankle pain, and knee pain.
Plantar Fasciitis – this is considered the most common foot problem, which creates swelling and pain due to overstretching the fibrous plantar aponeurosis.
Bunions – this occurs due to the buckling and jamming of joints and causes the partial dislocation of the big toe joint.
Hammertoes – this foot ailment is due to an imbalance of the toe muscles when the toes deform and lose their flexibility. In this foot problem, the toes may lose their ability to straighten out.
Haglund’s Deformity–this foot problem occurs when a person wears improper footwear, trauma or biomechanical imbalances. This is also known as pump hump.
Calluses–these can be particularly problematic for those suffering with diabetes, as they can cause ulcerations because of neuropathy. The general cause of calluses is due to the uneven distribution of a person’s weight on the ball of their foot.
Morton’s Neuroma–this is a very painful condition that results commonly from excessive pronation, resulting in enlarged and irritated plantar nerves.
Powerstep believes that your feet shouldn’t hurt, and their mission is to reduce and possibly get rid of it altogether. Powerstep orthotics are more effective than insoles, doing more than just cushioning a person’s feet. They provide cushioning, support and balance. Their line of high quality foot orthotics can be found at retailers and their Powerstep Pro line can only be found in medical offices.
